Spaces In between: RIBA Design Charette & Live Design Review for Cityscape Global Dubai

SPACES IN BETWEEN - CREATE DESIGN IDEAS FOR A FUTURE DUBAI  INTRODUCTION Architects across the UAE have long argued that the country’s public realm needs to better focus on the pedestrian experience and place-making, achieved through the use of public art and further integrating transportation technology advancements into public space design. Over the years, some development in Dubai have been independent of each other and this had led to disparate entities with little or no emphasis on a more connected urbanism and on the people, their health and their experience of the urban realm.  As the UAE continues to grow apace, developers and critically UAE citizens, are increasingly recognising the value of good design in the public realm, as ‘spaces in between’ are transformed into integrated neighbourhoods, providing context for architectural structures to thrive, and the surrounding communities to bond and flourish. EVENT BRIEF The purpose of this unique event is to bring an expert team of multi-disciplinary professionals, who will work together to discuss and produce an original design in response to the question of ‘spaces in between’. Teams will be asked to consider how to improve connectivity and integration of areas in the city. Proposed schemes should address how to improve the public realm and design interventions that will improve the experience for Dubai’s citizens and create vibrant sustainable communities. Proposals should consider how to design a more inclusive centred city and create convivial spaces that will stimulate interactions between people and communities whilst the issue of the reliance on cars and prominence of roads should also be addressed. Successful proposals will make sensitive consideration to context, materials and the urban form of Dubai with special considerations to: Provision of green space and community areas Sustainability and pollution reduction Connections between city zones Address the effects on the motorway through the centre of the city Accessibility* Provide shade and air paths * Dubai Universal Design Code, Dubai Health Authority Feb 2017 THE PARTICIPANTS The event will be open to a pan professional audience from the built environment professions and will bring architects, planners, surveyors, engineers and developers together. THE PROCESS Attendees will be split into small teams to stimulate debate and encourage networking, and a team leader will be appointed beforehand. Full brief with confirmation of team and leader will be sent to individual participants before the day. On the day itself, the teams will be briefed of expectations by the Chair before each team gather together to work on their thoughts and design. A large space will be allocated to each team to undertake design work at World Trade Centre. Each group will be issued with a range of equipment and information including scale maps etc. LIVE DESIGN REVIEW DESIGN 14.00 – 15.00 Following the Charette, the teams will present their schemes to an audience and take part in a ‘Live Design Review’ to a panel of expert Judges chaired by Chris Williamson of Weston Williamson Architects. Chris Jones of 10 Design will be the moderator for the session.  The review will be conducted live at the first day of Cityscape. 25th September is a by invite only day at the conference and we expect the day to be attendance by developers and policymakers in addition to the architecture and design professionals. The session gives the audience an in-depth look into the ideas behind the schemes and reveals how large-scale urban design problems can be tackled.
