      Onancock Creek Kayak Garden Tours

This year's Historic Garden Week on the Eastern Shore May 4 features four homes visible from Onancock Creek, all within easy paddling from the Town wharf. Burnham Guides will host special kayak tours on Saturday and Sunday that give guests a chance to see the homes and gardens from the water.

The homes selected for the statewide Historic Garden Week span the centuries of Onancock's history, from the oldest house in town (1769) and its historic cemetery, an 18th-century Victorian gem, a 1927 Sears Craftsman bungalow, to a 21st-century Federal-style home. Several have not been open to the public before!

Kayakers will NOT be landing at any of the homes, so be sure to purchase a tour ticket to truly enjoy the homes and gardens by land at

The kayak tours are Saturday (9-11 a.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m.-noon) morning, so you can kayak either before or after the garden tour. These easy 2-hour tours begin in the kayak shop located in the Historic Steamboat Ticket Office, and are suitable for all abilities. Your guide will narrate the history of the region, from native peoples, through Capt. John Smith, schooner and steamboat days to the present.

The kayak trip is $45 per person. Beginners and children welcome. Call 757-710-5137 or email to sign-up (
